| Case Study - Building against the elements |
|
In 2006 when Amanda Boland finally became totally exasperated by her cramped kitchen extension and even more confined bathroom, she turned to Building Concepts for help.
The Project Consultant suggested knocking down the existing extension and building a larger extension which would be able to accomodate a good size kitchen and bathroom. By careful planning, he was able to incorporate a second w.c. as well as an utility room and managed the entire planning process. Before signing the contract Amanda was able to review other projects that he had completed, as well as to meet other satisfied customers, one of whom actually had a project in progress.
Given the choice of building in the late autumn or waiting for the spring, Amanda decided to "go for it" as she had set her heart on having her new kitchen and bathroom in time for Christmas.
Work started during the first week in November and, before the end of the week potential disaster struck when the excavations revealed that the land was unsuitable for traditional foundations.
As Amanda recalls: "the Building Inspector insisted on a raft foundation, essentially a huge single slab covering the entire area of the proposed extension and going well beyond the depth of the specified foundations. I could have cried when I heard this, as I had no washing or cooking facilities and was having to use an outside temporary toilet. However, Kevin and the boys did a magnificent job in turning round the complex calculations required for the new foundation, over the weekend."
Matters became even more serious when constant and torrential rains through the rest of November further hampered progress. In response, the building team geared up to 7 day working, and scheduled more team members.
Having gradually won back most of the lost time, Amanda was due to be given possession two days before Christmas. However, this still left her with the immense task of fitting the new kitchen (which had been excluded from the original contract). Again the Building Concepts team stepped up to the plate.
As Amanda explained "Without even being asked, Kevin and the boys stepped in and fitted the entire kitchen for me in the space of a day. After all the delays and the major change to the specification, I still had my new kitchen and bathroom in time for Christmas. Yes, of course the costs were higher than originally budgeted but were still within my original contingency figure. All in all a wonderful job which I don't think another company would have achieved." |
